Dana Dumas started her bakery journey ten years ago when she launched SugarJam Cookies. SugarJam began selling gourmet sugar cookies filled with specialty jams at the downtown Phoenix, Arizona farmers’ market. Thanks to the Arizona Cottage Law, Dana was able to bake at home for the first two years before working in a chef-shared kitchen.
From there, she grew her business by selling at more than six farmers’ markets throughout Arizona. Dana also began selling at festivals, art shows, vintage shows, and craft shows, working tirelessly to put her delicious sugar cookies into the hands, and mouths, of her community.
After seven months in the shared kitchen, Dana moved into her own location in north Scottsdale and SugarJam Bake Shop & Bistro was born. Over the next six years, Dana expanded her bakery and cafe business while also building her own trailer so she could participate in food truck events. SugarJam’s rapid growth eventually led her into corporate and private catering.
Dana’s favorite part of being a small business owner is meeting her wonderful customers and providing a great place for people to work. Her passion for both her customers and her staff shines in the way she talks about her business. National Pie Day is a big deal at SugarJam. They whip up a plethora of delicious pies including classic apple, bourbon pecan, southern sweet potato, and classic cherry. With all these options, Dana’s favorite pie is still the classic apple.
Today, Dana’s gourmet cookie business has evolved beyond sugar cookies into a full restaurant, bar, and bakery known as SugarJam – The Southern Kitchen. This unique space is a true “mom and pop” establishment, delivering both uniqueness and warm Southern charm.
Dana describes her experience with Pie Insurance as “wonderfully easy.” As her business has grown, Pie has provided fair rates and great coverage throughout the transitions.
We are grateful to serve small businesses like SugarJam – The Southern Kitchen. Happy National Pie Day!
